A thorough study of the basic elements of the
structure of music, the focus includes: studying rhythmic notation
and meter, pitch notation, the organization of intervals, scales
both major and minor, modes, key signatures, circle of fifths,
the construction triads and 7th chord harmony, and
inversions of chords; also includes essential music vocabulary,
and symbols. Students will learn to apply chord and scale knowledge
to the keyboard.
The continued study of the structural elements
of music from Fundamentals of Music Theory. Study includes
analyzing the structure of melodies, harmonizing melodies, extended
chord seniorities, studying chord progressions of different styles,
chord embellishment with secondary dominants and secondary diminished
chords. Students are involved in some creative music writing projects
with a specific function in mind as part of the class. [Prerequisite:
Fundamentals of Music Theory or Consent of Instructor]
The continued study of the structural musical
elements with an emphasis on harmony. Study includes analysis
of chord progressions, further harmonizing melodies, chord embellishment
with tritone substitutes, and borrowed chords, modal harmony,
analysis of form, and writing four-part harmony. Students are
involved in some creative music writing projects with a specific
function in mind as part of the class. [Prerequisite:
Music Theory I or Consent of Instructor]
